Talkr.IM service update: gateways

Posted by Nicolas Vérité on January 22, 2010

The Talkr.IM XMPP/Jabber service will undergo today a service update, adding gateways to legacy IM systems.

ProcessOne's XMPP service Talkr.IM will receive new features for all users: IM gateways. These gateways will enable XMPP users to join legacy IM systems with their existing accounts. This will seamlessly merge the legacy IM contact lists to the main XMPP contact list ("roster"). Of course the main features are presence and chat, but these gateways also enable the status exchange, as well as the avatar, and much more.

We had already deployed an IRC gateway, the new gateways (or "transport" in XMPP terms) are the following:

  • AIM
  • ICQ
  • MSN/WLM
  • Yahoo!

This adds IM contact points to your addressbook, and enable the inclusion of millions of legacy IM users to XMPP users.

We are planning a service interruption at:

  • 13:00 UTC
  • 14:00 Paris
  • 16:00 Moscow
  • 05:00 Los Angeles
  • 08:00 New York
  • 22:00 Tokyo

We will remind our online users a few minutes before.

Update: our service update is done, you can now register your legacy IM accounts and play with them.

limit already exceeded? seems like we can’t do anything about this.

would be awesome if you were to have an agreement with AOL to support this unlimited.

@mike: Limit exceeded is per user most of the time. If you have logged in and out several times in a short while (From the gateway or any other client).
Wait a moment and it should solve your problem.

Hi,

I would like to know more on how to do this. Does having these gateways with various IMs mean that with my single talkr account, I can chat with them all?

How do I enable this? BTW, I’m mostly using meebo as my IM.

@Robert
The gateway help you federate transparently all your IM account under a single Talkr.IM.
You need an account for each third party IM network, but then, you register your login password for each third party IM through the gateway (For example by using discovery to find the available service).
You will have a single contact list with all your contacts from various network. you will see presence, they will see you and you can chat with them.
Enjoy !
