The XMPP Standards Foundation has defined a standard protocol to add publish and subscribe mechanisms to XMPP (XEP-0060). It is currently not largely used because of one missing implementation element: it should be implemented as the base of an application server to spread adoption among service developers. The next version of ejabberd will introduce a plugin-based publish and subscribe implementation

Erlang has the ability to upgrade the code of a live system. This is a feature which is very appreciated by our customers. They can apply the patch we provide for their Instant Messaging system without having to stop / restart the service. ejabberd 2.0 strongly improves XMPP services clustering. All components included in ejabberd are clustered in this upcoming version, improving scalability and reliability. Moreover, the clustering features are also spreading to external components, thanks to cluster-wide, built-in load-balancing features.
